About Nicole
Most change initiatives hand people a fish, or teach them to fish. Agroecologist Nicole Masters asks a different question: "Why are you fishing?" Because the problem was never the problem. It's the framing, and the relationship underneath it.
With over twenty-five years working alongside food producers and organizations spanning five continents, and over thirty million acres, she has witnessed the same thing again and again: the solutions already exist. What's been missing is the question that finds them.
Her work centers on what she calls keystone humans: the land stewards, organizations and catalysts whose positive influence spreads far beyond their own gate, the way a single species can reshape an entire ecosystem. These are people rewriting narratives that no longer fit, often without much fanfare and frequently against the advice of everyone around them. Nicole finds them, works alongside them, and tells their stories.

Her work earned her an Alien of Extraordinary Abilities US visa, and a finalist spot for Rural Business Woman of the Year in New Zealand.
